Tommy Robinson joins the 'Telegram' Social Media Platform

Following his ban from Snapchat, Tommy Robinson's news team, TR.NEWS, has set up a Telegram group for him to once again be able to engage with the public directly.

This comes after Twitter, Facebook and Instagram all banned Mr Robinson. Recently, his account on Youtube has also been severely restricted.

Wired Reports:
YouTube has gutted Robinson’s account. It has removed comments, likes, viewer counts, suggested videos, and live-streaming. You cannot find Robinson by searching for him on YouTube, either, and his videos will no longer be recommended to users who have watched videos the platform’s algorithm deems to be similar to Robinson’s. The far-right figurehead can still upload videos and circulate the links to his followers. But those who make it to one of his videos will first be confronted with a black screen bearing the message that YouTube has identified his content as “inappropriate or offensive for some audiences”.

Users will have to give their consent before the video starts playing.

YouTube has not banned Robinson. It has shadow-banned him - effectively hiding his content while still allowing him on the platform. He has not, according to a YouTube spokesperson, violated its rules on hate speech, as he did on Twitter and Facebook before being banned.
Launched in 2013, Telegram has a similar structure to WhatsApp, but is not owned by Facebook. It’s owned by a pair of Russian businessmen who believe in free speech and who have been shown not to cower to political pressure.

According to Wikipedia:
Telegram is a cloud-based instant messaging and voice over IP service developed by Telegram Messenger LLP, a privately held company registered in London, United Kingdom, founded by the Russian entrepreneur Pavel Durov and his brother Nikolai.

They also founded the popular Russian social network VK but left when it was taken over by the Mail.ru Group.

In March 2018, Telegram reached 200 million monthly active users. On March 14, 2019, Pavel Durov claimed that “3 million new users signed up for Telegram within the last 24 hours.” Durov didn’t specify what prompted this flood of new sign-ups, but the period matched a prolonged technical outage experienced by Facebook and its family of apps, including Instagram.

Telegram client apps are available for Android, iOS, Windows Phone, Windows NT, macOS and Linux.

Users can send messages and exchange photos, videos, stickers, audio and files of any type.
Tommy's Telegram channel is less than a week old but has already attracted over 15,000 subscribers. It would appear that a tipping point has been reached with Facebook and possibly YouTube where they have de-platformed so many prominent personalities that now users are deciding to break free from their dominance and explore other alternatives.
